Air Quality Monitoring

Cricket Valley Energy Center (CVEC) is one of New York State’s most efficient energy producers, using advanced combined-cycle technology to minimize emissions while maximizing energy output. The CVEC team is also exploring the use of green hydrogen to further reduce its emissions footprint, aligning with our commitment to cleaner energy solutions. Throughout the facility’s construction and operation, the CVEC team and third-party researchers have continuously monitored local air quality to ensure that Dover is safe for even the most vulnerable individuals, including those with asthma and the elderly.

In August 2024, in preparation for the renewal of CVEC’s Title V Air Pollution Control Permit, a third-party research group conducted an analysis of Dover’s hourly air quality. Their measurements conclusively showed that the CVEC facility did not contribute to the highest ambient air concentrations of nitrogen oxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and particulate matter (PM2.5). Rather, these air pollutants were associated with southerly winds traveling up to Dover from New York City.

Dover High School Weather and Air Quality Monitoring Station

To provide the community with access to important and continual air quality data, the CVEC team sponsors a Weather and Air Quality Monitoring Station located at Dover High School. Using the station’s air quality sensors, students and the public can survey the NO2, O3, and PM2.5 concentration at the campus. These metrics are automatically reported back to the CVEC team for review.

Reducing Regional Emissions

As one of the most efficient, reliable and least emitting energy producers, CVEC helps enable New York State to displace higher polluting coal, gas and oil plants, helping reduce regional emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon dioxide (CO2).

The CVEC team is currently renewing the facility’s Title V Air Pollution Control Permit to continue providing low emission power to New York and its surrounding region. Please visit the Permitting page to learn more.
